THE old section of Nilai will soon get a facelift following a decision by the authorities to repaint the facade of 22 shophouses that are nearly a century old.
Ten of the 22 shops will be repainted in the first phase of the project and work is due to be completed by mid-November.
Nilai Municipal Council (MPN) acting secretary Nazri Abd Ghani said the project would be carried out in collaboration with Nilai-based paint manufacturer Akzo Nobel Paints (M) Sdn Bhd.
“The paint will be sponsored by Akzo Nobel and we will pay RM1,120 to repaint each shop.
“The shopowner will only be required to fork out another RM500,” he said at the launch of the programme by Deputy Education Minister Datuk Chong Sin Woon.
The contractor appointed to carry out the project would first clear the moss off the structures and then fill up the cracks before beginning painting.
Nazri said the surface would then be given a layer of undercoat followed by two layers of ICI Dulux Weathershield premium paint. Each unit, he said, would have a unique colour code.
Chong expressed his gratitude to MPN and Akzo Nobel paints for bringing life to the area which, barely 30 years ago, was known as a “cowboy town”.
