KUCHING: Sarawak are aiming for a top five overall position at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) golf championship at Bukit Jawi Golf Resort in Pulau Pinang from June 8-10.
The state team of 18 golfers will compete in all the categories during the three-day annual meet for Boys/Girls U18, U15 and U12.
“Yes, I am quite confident that Sarawak can do well this year and our Boys/Girls U15 players have very good chances of winning medals,” state MSSM golf technical and development chairman Difison Jelema said yesterday.
Last year, Sarawak finished sixth overall at Palm Resort Golf and Country Club, Johor with the U18 girls clinching third and the U12 boys also third. The U18 boys, U15 boys and U15 girls all finished in fourth place.
“We are banking our hopes on Matthew Peregriine Ong Zhen Lei, Malcolm Ting Siong Hung and Lim Beng Kiat to deliver in the Boys U15 while we are also expecting a strong showing from the Girls U15 team of Ashley Lau Jen Wen, Eliza Mae Kho and Adeline Lau Jen Yun,” said Difison.
He is also hoping for Aaron Lau Zhun Min, Bernard Yeo Chun How and Mohd Nazeem Jefery to spring some surprises in Boys U18 category.
Sarawak’s representatives in the Girls U18 are Sarah Jane Kho, Angel Tiong Wei Xin and Priscilla Huong Yunn while the Girls U12 team is made up of Sharifah Aisyah Tijan Binyahya, Huong Sheau Yuan and Mirabel Ting Ern Hui.
The Boys U12 team comprised Anson Yeo Boon Xiang, Elden Sim Zhen and Muhammad Aiman Al-Hakim Nazarudy.
