A total of 125 schoolchildren from Tamil schools in Negri Sembilan were rewarded with laptops for scoring 7As in last year’s UPSR examination.
MIC Negri Sembilan also gave 61 Tamil schools in the state a laptop each at the ceremony.
State MIC chief Datuk A. Ganesan said it was the first time Tamil schools and its students in the state were rewarded with laptops.
He said the event, which was held at a reputable hotel in Seremban, was organised to motivate pupils to excel academically.
“This is important because the 125 pupils who scored 7As are from 33 out of the total 61 Tamil schools in the state.
“Our aim is also to motivate pupils in the remaining 28 Tamils schools to emulate their peers in the better performing Tamil schools,” he said.
At the event, the state MIC also presented a laptop to Dr. R.Nagaletchumi, a former student of SJK(T) Lenggeng, for excelling academically.
Also on the honours list was U. Ashvini, who scored 10A+ in last year’s SPM exam.
For her achievement, Ashvini received RM2,000 and a netbook.
Ganesan said the state MIC would work with Yayasan Strategik Sosial, the party’s social arm, to address social problems faced by the community and to help pupils do better in under- performing schools, among others.
MIC president Datuk Seri G.Palanivel, who was also present, advised party leaders at all levels to give emphasis to education.
“We have to do more to ensure our children get the best education.
“As party leader, I will support you all the way,” he said, adding that Indian students who excelled academically would also be able to apply for scholarship grants from the party’s Tan Sri Manickavasagam Fund.
Palanivel also commended the organisers for recognising the young high-achievers and pledged RM50,000 in donation. - The Star
