SEREMBAN: The country has lost an aspiring middle distance runner following the death of 22-year-old national 800m trainee S. Shivashankaran.
Shivashankaran, who was awarded the Negri Sembilan Schools Athlete of the Year in 2010, died without regaining consciousness two days after being involved in a road accident in Kuala Lumpur.
The only son and eldest of three siblings clocked 1:57.77 to win a bronze medal in the 800m event at last year’s Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Kangar. He also finished 12th in the 1,500m at the Games.
He was riding a motorcycle when he was involved in an accident with a lorry along Jalan Klang Lama last Saturday. He suffered sever head injuries and died on Monday.
His coach R. Mogan said Shivashankaran, who was preparing for the 2017 SEA Games, was to have reported for duty with the Navy in December.
“He had such a bright future. His death is not only a loss to Negri Sembilan but the nation as well,” he said.
Mogan, who won the 10,000m walk gold at the 1995 Chiang Mai SEA Games, said that Shivashankaran had gone to Kuala Lumpur with friends.
“They would always take the car but this time they went by motorcycles,” said Mogan, adding that Shivashankaran leaves behind his mother and two younger sisters. - The Star
